Multiplayer! Up to four players can team up and fight together in co-op mode. Options! Personalize your character, then fight up-close and personal with melee swings, hang back with ranged attacks, or tank your way through swarms of mobs, shielded by heavy armour! Very pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed this game just as much as Diablo 3 if not more. I wish the game had unique classes instead of the defining differences of characters being your loadout, but ultimately this doesn’t matter much to me personally. The island itself, while not very big, also constantly rewards those who want to explore: there are very, very few spots that are actually empty. Taking a new turn usually leads to new discoveries instead, be it a new animal to talk to, some money, a shortcut or something else entirely. That said, as A Short Hike offers no map (a compass pointing north at best), it can be quite easy to get lost – at least during the first hour or so. While I feel that getting lost is quite fitting for an adventure and getting to know the island over time feels even better, this might be a potentially frustrating for others. Then again, as the island isn’t very big, you’ll soon find yourself in familiar territory again, I promise. I enjoyed the easy-going gameplay, I also have to admit that it’s not anything special. It definitely feels nice to glide across the island thanks to responsive controls, don’t get me wrong. But it’s not very difficult or mechanically deep either, even though this wouldn’t fit a game like this to begin with. No, it’s the combination of look, music and relaxing exploration that makeA Short Hike so special – not to mention the last “ingredient” I need to address, the dialogues & characters.
